Painting Sash Windows near Headcorn

These 2 sash windows in a farmhouse near to Headcorn are a bit unusual and certainly not the originals. One giveaway is that the glazing bars and meeting rails are far too thick to be the Georgian windows that the house would have originally had. Nevertheless, the local council wanted to see them retained as they are still well over 100 years old and are a part of the history of the house.

The sash windows here had paintwork that had not been touched for around 20 years and was extremely flaky, if not missing at all. Despite this, the timber was sound, testament to it's excellent quality. Much fiddly labour goes into a job like this. Carefully scraping away the old paint off the glass and sanding the glazing bars by hand takes much time and patience, and in fact constitutes around 80% of the decorating work.

The other 20% is applying the 3 coats of paint, primer, undercoat and top coat. I love the the contrasting black frames and white sashes that these farmhouses sometimes have. Beautiful!

Add in new sash cords, draught-proofing and brass sash fasteners/ handles and you also have a very well working sash window.
